The Right-Sized Library
June 6, 2023

A library is unlike any other commercial space. Consider the wide variety of users, and the wide variety of tasks they’ll do in its spaces, and effective planning seems like a big task indeed. The term ‘right-sizing’ needs to apply not only to the space itself but the fixtures and furnishings.
Utilizing the available space efficiently begins with a thorough analysis of the library’s functions, activities and storage needs. A certain amount of space will be devoted to fixed storage … shelves for books, display racks for magazines, DVDs or other media. The goal is to optimize the remaining space to serve the users and their needs, and that’s where furnishings come in.
Knowing what will happen in the library’s spaces is only part of the solution … it’s important to understand the “who” as well. Who are the library’s users, and what are their preferences? If you’re not sure, ask them. Time spent in gathering feedback prior to design will help make the very best use of the space.
As with office and classroom space, versatility is key. Modular furniture that can serve different needs, from privacy to group collaboration, is vital in a library. And also as in offices and classrooms, comfortable furniture that encourages (quiet) social interaction might be a part of the solution. The goal is to serve users’ needs and maximize the available space at the same time, so look for furnishings that are compact and multi-functional. And beyond comfort, good ergonomics are important. Prioritize furnishings that support proper posture.
It’s worth noting that books and other printed materials are far from the only reason to visit a library. Users are just as likely to be browsing or working on laptops or other devices, so furnishings should have charging ports and power outlets. Furniture that incorporates storage will help to reduce clutter.
Remember that not all library users are adults. Many of the same rules apply to children’s areas: versatile furniture that uses the space efficiently and supports good posture is important to kids and adults alike. But a children’s area must support a wide range of different-sized bodies, and it’s likely to feature more vibrant colors and playful patterns in its finishes. You can’t go too far wrong with some beanbag chairs to promote flopping down and reading for a while.
Accessibility is a primary concern for children and adults alike. The entire space and at least some of its furnishings should be able to accommodate a wide range of mobility, including those confined to wheelchairs or scooters.
The final certainty in planning a library is change. Just as planners a decade or two ago could not have anticipated the need for furniture that can charge mobile devices, the future will hold more change. It’s vital to regularly evaluate how the library and its furnishings are being used, and whether they still meet the needs of its visitors. Be prepared to adapt and adjust based on changing needs.
