Color Perceptions in the Workplace

Corporate Facility: Color Perceptions in the Workplace

A locally owned, full-service plumbing and HVAC company serving the Mid-Atlantic region underwent a 9,000 sq. ft. office renovation. Within the past year, the company has initiated a heating and air conditioning division.

We will explore how color perceptions in the workplace contributed to improve consistency of brand trades and overall office functionality.

Challenge

With the addition of heating and cooling, the company wanted to incorporate all divisions of business throughout their office design.

The company recognized the importance of appearing consistent throughout their brand trades to not only the customers, but the employees in the workplace as well. They were looking for a solution to showcase all sections of the business and refresh the office functionality for employees.

Solution

Initially Douron selected furniture options based on the company’s office layout and desired updates. Once the floorplans were reviewed, our project team collaborated with an external firm and the company to offer their customers and employees a clear vision of branding through product and finish selections. The final products were chosen for their purpose and ability to symbolize the range of services offered by the business.

The implementation includes the following:

Water/Cooling

The company has always been recognized for their plumbing services. To continue this perception of water/cooling, Douron and the external firm presented lounge furniture in blue hues that would depict this specific sector of the business.

Heating

To introduce the new division of the company, Douron decided to implicate the heating element through the vibrant red paint color of the chairs located in the bistro area. They add a bright pop of color while remaining within the brand consistency.

Pipes/Metal Utilized

Throughout the renovation of the facility, gray hues were utilized within lounge upholstery, chair metals and workstation finishes. This representation of the pipes and metal found throughout the plumbing, heating and air conditioning industry offers a relief of color from the pops of red and blue.

Expected Results

The adoption of tasteful color choices and updated furnishings throughout the office renovation produced significant results:

Consistency of Brand Trades

The subtle scheme of the red, blue and gray colors play a crucial role in maintaining consistent branding of business divisions. By incorporating subtle areas of color into the workplace, the furnishings contribute to a symbolic representation of the trades.

Functionality for Employees

Douron tailored each office and workstation with the individual occupying the space in mind. The staff had been working in enclosed, outdated workstations that did not support interactions prior to the renovation. By introducing common areas occupied with lounge products, this enables employees to communicate comfortably and candidly.

Aesthetic Workplace

Playful pops of color in the bistro and common areas throughout the floor plan provide employees the opportunity to unwind and spark new inspiration when they need a break from their everyday responsibilities. The relief of color found in the gray tones of the workstations re-focus employees and allow them to settle into their tasks at hand.

Conclusion

The color perceptions in the workplace contributed to the inclusivity of all services offered. By incorporating Douron’s recommended furnishings into their workplace, the company successfully met the need to showcase all of the brand trades in addition to an updated aesthetic and improved functionality for their employees within budget.
